Umaru is a specialist Family Physician with extensive experience working with different tiers of the health sector in Africa (Nigeria and South Africa) and Canada.

In South Africa, he worked in the public and academic sectors in the Department of Health of the North West Provincial Government as a Sub-district Family Physician and a part-time clinical lecturer in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand. He was responsible for coordinating primary and emergency medical care delivery within the Tswaing sub-district of the North West province in addition to the training of medical students during their rural rotations from the University of the Witwatersrand. He played a critical role in the expansion of comprehensive HIV care and treatment in addition to the implementation of the NIMART (Nurse Initiation and Management of ART) program.

At present, Umaru is engaged as a Family Physician in Calgary in the province of Alberta, Canada, combining this role with a part-time clinical lectureship in the Department of Family Medicine, Cummings School of Medicine, University of Calgary.

He is also consolidating his knowledge in the field of Precision Medicine which leverages the power of big data analytics in integrating genomic, environmental and lifestyle data to arrive at personalised solutions to healthcare delivery. Umaru is responsible for strategic partnerships at Tesnas.

Umaru graduated from the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria and holds a masters degree in Family Medicine from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. He also possesses a diploma in HIV Medicine, Higher Certificate in Management (Cum Laude) and is a certificant of the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
